Funaria hygrometrica

Bonfire Moss, Common Cord-Moss, Cord Moss

Easy careTerrestrialNon-toxic16 cm

A pioneer moss that colonises bare, disturbed soil — roadsides, burnt earth, and empty plant pots — across every continent except Antarctica, which is how it earned the name 'bonfire moss'. Its short upright stems rarely exceed 1 cm, forming loose pale-green tufts; when fertile, each stem raises a distinctive pear-shaped capsule on a long yellowish stalk that twists when dry. It does best in cool to moderate temperatures with steady moisture and good airflow, making it better suited to open terrariums than to sealed ones. Once established it spreads readily from spores, which germinate within just a few days under good conditions.

Propagation

Tufts can be divided and pressed onto moist, bare substrate in a new location. Fragments establish quickly, and the moss also spreads vegetatively via protonemal fragmentation — small pieces of the thread-like protonema will regenerate into new plants.

Frequently asked

Can Bonfire Moss grow in a closed terrarium?

Yes. Bonfire Moss prefers high (60–80%) humidity, which is what a closed terrarium provides, and tolerates shade-tolerant conditions.

Does Bonfire Moss need drainage?

Bonfire Moss prefers a moist substrate. Drainage is helpful but not critical; consistent moisture matters more.

What humidity does Bonfire Moss need?

Bonfire Moss does best in high (60–80%) humidity.

Is Bonfire Moss pet-safe?

Bonfire Moss is considered non-toxic to common household pets.

How tall does Bonfire Moss grow?

Bonfire Moss typically reaches 1–6 cm at maturity.

How do you propagate Bonfire Moss?

Bonfire Moss can be propagated by division or spores.
