Tillandsia bulbosa

Bulbous Air Plant, Bulbous Tillandsia

Easy careEpiphyteNon-toxic8–22 cm

Tillandsia bulbosa grows wild across the humid lowland forests of Central America, the Caribbean, and northern South America, clinging to tree branches with no soil and drawing water and nutrients straight from the air. Its swollen, bulb-like base — formed by tightly overlapping leaf sheaths that shelter ants in the wild — tapers into snaking, tendril-like leaves that look almost like a small green octopus. As a mesic species from wetter habitats it tolerates closed-terrarium humidity better than most air plants, provided it can dry between waterings.

Propagation

After flowering the mother plant slowly produces small pups from around the base. Wait until each pup is roughly one-third the size of the parent, then gently twist or cut it free and let it grow on with the same misting routine. The original rosette eventually declines once its pups are established, leaving a self-renewing clump.
