Masdevallia nidifica

Nesting Masdevallia

Moderate careEpiphyteNon-toxic58 cm

A miniature epiphytic orchid from the cloud forests of Central and South America, growing from Nicaragua south to Peru at altitudes of 450–2,500 m. It is one of the most accommodating Masdevallia species for terrarium culture — compact enough to fit in a small enclosure and capable of blooming multiple times a year when conditions are stable. Each plant consists of slender ramicauls, each tipped with a single paddle-shaped leaf, and produces solitary flowers held at or just above leaf level in translucent shades of yellow, white, or red. Temperature is the critical variable: it does best below 26 °C and requires good airflow to prevent fungal issues in the humid conditions it otherwise needs.

Propagation

Divide mature clumps when repotting, separating sections that each carry several ramicauls and an intact root system. Work carefully — the roots are fine and salt-sensitive. Repot into fresh sphagnum or orchid bark mix, keep consistently moist, and allow a few weeks for the division to settle before resuming normal conditions. Autumn or spring are the preferred times, when the plant is about to enter active root growth.

Native range

Native to Northern South America, Central America, and Western South America.
