Hemionitis arifolia

Heart Fern, Heart Leaf Fern, Tongue Fern

Moderate careLithophyteNon-toxic1525 cm

Native to humid tropical forests across South and Southeast Asia, this small fern is immediately recognisable by its perfectly heart-shaped sterile fronds perched on slender, near-black stems. It grows as a lithophyte or low epiphyte — clinging to mossy rocks and tree bases in the forest understorey — which explains why it thrives in the steady moisture of a closed terrarium. It does best at 18–28 °C with humidity above 60%; drop below that and the fronds curl within hours. Its compact size (rarely exceeding 20 cm) makes it one of the most useful foreground plants for detailed terrarium compositions.

Propagation

The most reliable method. When repotting, tease apart the rootball so each section retains healthy roots and at least one frond, then pot into moist, acidic substrate. Cover loosely with a clear bag or place in a closed terrarium to maintain humidity while the divisions re-establish. New frond growth signals the plant has settled.

Native range

Native to China, Eastern Asia, Indian Subcontinent, Indo-China, and Malesia.

Does Heart Fern need drainage?

Heart Fern prefers a moist substrate. Drainage is helpful but not critical; consistent moisture matters more.

What humidity does Heart Fern need?

Heart Fern does best in high (60–80%) humidity.

Is Heart Fern pet-safe?

Heart Fern is considered non-toxic to common household pets.

How tall does Heart Fern grow?
