Nepenthes ampullaria Jack
Flask-Shaped Pitcher Plant, Common Swamp Pitcher Plant
Nepenthes ampullaria is a tropical pitcher plant from the lowland rainforests of Borneo, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and New Guinea, where it sprawls across the shaded forest floor in dense colonies of small, urn-shaped traps. Its pitchers are short and squat — rarely more than ten centimetres tall — and clustered low to the ground in 'carpets' fed by underground runners, so a single plant can produce dozens of traps at once. What makes this Nepenthes unusual is that it has largely abandoned hunting for living prey: it feeds mainly on dead leaves and other plant debris that fall into its open pitchers, drawing roughly a third to nearly half of its nitrogen from leaf litter rather than insects. It does well in a warm, humid closed terrarium with bright indirect light, and is one of the easier Nepenthes species for beginners.
