Marcgravia sintenisii

Rainbow Marcgravia, Bejuco de Lira, Shingle Plant

Moderate careSemi-epiphyte10150 cm

Marcgravia sintenisii is a shingling vine from the wet tropical forests of Puerto Rico, where it climbs tree trunks by pressing its young leaves flat against the bark. In its juvenile form the small rounded leaves arrange themselves in two tight overlapping ranks, and new growth flushes a vivid red before maturing to deep glossy green — a flush bright enough that the terrarium trade nicknames it the Rainbow Marcgravia. It is one of the more demanding species in the genus: established plants settle at humidity in the 70–90% range, but during the establishment phase leaves drop quickly if humidity dips below 80%.

Propagation

Take a tip cutting with four to six leaves and lay it flat on damp long-fibre sphagnum so the nodes press into the moss, then seal it in a clear container under bright indirect light. Roots are slower to form than in other Marcgravia — typically four to six weeks — and the cutting will drop leaves if humidity falls below 80% before it settles.

Native to Caribbean.
