Haworthiopsis fasciata

Zebra Haworthia, Zebra Plant, Zebra Cactus, Little Zebra Plant

Easy careTerrestrialNon-toxic5–15 cm

Native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it grows in the acidic sandy soils of the fynbos — a windswept shrubland near Port Elizabeth that bakes in summer and chills in winter. The tight rosette of dark green leaves is crossed with horizontal bands of raised white bumps called tubercles, giving it the unmistakable striped pattern that earned the common name 'zebra plant'. Note: it was long sold as Haworthia fasciata, but is now correctly placed in the genus Haworthiopsis following a reclassification of the Haworthia group. In a terrarium it belongs in an open, well-ventilated setup where humidity stays low and the soil can dry fully between waterings.

Propagation

Mature plants produce small offsets — called pups — from the base of the rosette. Wait until a pup has developed its own visible roots before separating it; gently twist or cut it free, allow the cut to callous for a day, then plant in dry cactus mix. Water sparingly until established. A healthy plant typically produces one to three pups per year.
