Pinguicula moranensis Kunth

Mexican Butterwort, Moran's Butterwort

Pinguicula moranensis is a carnivorous butterwort from the mountains of central and southern Mexico, with outlying populations in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, where it grows on shaded slopes, gully walls, and mossy rocks beside streams. It forms a flat rosette of pale green leaves, up to about ten centimetres across, whose upper surface glistens with sticky digestive glands that trap small flying insects. The species is heterophyllous: in summer it carries broad, soft, carnivorous leaves, but as the dry season approaches it shrinks into a tight winter rosette of small, fleshy, non-glandular leaves that look more like a tiny succulent. Tall, slender stalks rise above the rosette twice a year, each bearing a single pink, violet, or magenta flower with a long backward spur. It does well in a bright, humid terrarium so long as the substrate is poor and mineral-rich rather than peaty alone, and the winter rosette is allowed to dry between waterings.

Propagation

Gently pull a healthy leaf — ideally one of the small, fleshy winter leaves — sideways from the rosette so the white base comes away intact. Lay it on the surface of barely moist peat-and-perlite mix without burying it and keep humidity high. Tiny plantlets emerge from the leaf base over four to eight weeks. Leaf pullings are by far the most reliable way to propagate this species.

Native to Mexico and Central America.

Frequently asked

Can Mexican Butterwort grow in a closed terrarium?

Yes. Mexican Butterwort prefers high (60–80%) humidity, which is what a closed terrarium provides, and tolerates bright-indirect-light-loving conditions.

Does Mexican Butterwort need drainage?

Mexican Butterwort prefers a moist substrate. Drainage is helpful but not critical; consistent moisture matters more.

What humidity does Mexican Butterwort need?

Mexican Butterwort does best in high (60–80%) humidity.

Is Mexican Butterwort pet-safe?

Mexican Butterwort is considered non-toxic to common household pets.

How tall does Mexican Butterwort grow?

Mexican Butterwort typically reaches 5–25 cm at maturity.

How do you propagate Mexican Butterwort?

Mexican Butterwort can be propagated by leaf cuttings or seeds.
