Begonia prismatocarpa

Prism-fruited Begonia, Miniature African Begonia

Easy careTerrestrialMildly toxic1520 cm

A miniature West African begonia native to the rainforests of Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and the Gulf of Guinea island of Bioko, where it grows on the shaded forest floor beneath dense canopy. Its small, serrated lime-green leaves spread from a creeping rhizome to form a low, dense carpet — and unlike many begonias, it flowers almost constantly, producing bright yellow blooms with an orange flush year-round. It grows naturally as both a terrestrial and epiphytic plant, making it one of the more flexible species for terrarium placement on substrate or hardscape alike. Because it favours the consistently warm and wet conditions of the equatorial forest understorey, it thrives in the enclosed humidity of a closed terrarium.

Keep under warm, filtered light with high humidity — a closed container works particularly well. Roots form within 3–4 weeks and this species roots faster than most begonias.
