Schistidium maritimum

Seaside Grimmia, Sea Schistidium

Expert careLithophyteNon-toxic15 cm

A compact, cushion-forming moss that grows on coastal rocks just above the high-water line, enduring constant salt spray. It is one of the very few mosses classified as a halophyte, meaning it can tolerate saline conditions. It forms neat olive-green to dark green tufts in cracks and crevices of seaside rock faces across Atlantic Europe. In cultivation it grows well without salt water, making it an unusual candidate for open terrariums or vivaria simulating rocky coastal habitats.
