Pinguicula primuliflora is a small carnivorous butterwort from the wet pinelands and seepage bogs of the south-eastern United States, where it grows along the edges of slow streams from Mississippi through Alabama into the Florida Panhandle. It forms a flat rosette of soft, pale-green leaves up to about eight centimetres long, each one coated in microscopic sticky glands that trap and digest small flying insects. Unlike its cold-temperate relatives it is essentially evergreen and does not form a winter hibernaculum — it simply slows down in cool weather. Early each spring it sends up slender stalks bearing single primrose-like flowers, usually pale violet with a white throat. It is one of the easiest butterworts to keep in a wet, bright terrarium, and it propagates itself prolifically — plantlets emerge directly from the leaf tips and around the base, so a healthy plant can quickly form a small colony.

Propagation

Unusually, this species produces plantlets directly on the tips of its own leaves — and often along the sides as well — so the simplest method is to lay a healthy detached leaf on the surface of wet peat-and-sand mix and leave it undisturbed. Tiny plantlets emerge within a few weeks, sometimes several from a single leaf. Once each plantlet has its own roots and two or three leaves, gently lift it and pot it on. Leaf pullings work without any special treatment.
