Heliamphora minor is a small carnivorous pitcher plant endemic to the cloud-soaked summit of Auyán-tepui in southern Venezuela, the same flat-topped sandstone plateau that gives rise to Angel Falls. It is one of the smallest of the so-called sun pitchers, forming a clumping rosette of slender, pale-green pitchers seven to fifteen centimetres tall, each topped by a tiny bright-red nectar spoon that lures insects to the rim and into the trap. Up on the tepui, days are bright and cool, nights are cold and damp, and rain falls almost constantly — conditions any cultivator has to mimic, which is why this plant is normally grown in a 'highland' terrarium with 70–90% humidity, strong light, and a real day-night temperature swing. Of all the Heliamphora species, H. minor is one of the most tolerant of slightly warmer days and lower humidity, making it the usual starting point for new growers.

Propagation

Pull a young leaf downward and outward so the whole white base comes away intact, then lay it on live sphagnum moss in a closed, brightly lit container kept cool. New plantlets can take six months to a year to form roots and develop, but the technique can produce several offspring from a single donor plant.

Can Sun Pitcher grow in a closed terrarium?

Yes. Sun Pitcher prefers very high (above 80%) humidity, which is what a closed terrarium provides, and tolerates bright-indirect-light-loving conditions.

Does Sun Pitcher need drainage?

Sun Pitcher prefers a wet substrate. Drainage is helpful but not critical; consistent moisture matters more.

What humidity does Sun Pitcher need?

Sun Pitcher does best in very high (above 80%) humidity.

Is Sun Pitcher pet-safe?

Sun Pitcher is considered non-toxic to common household pets.

How tall does Sun Pitcher grow?

Sun Pitcher typically reaches 7–15 cm at maturity.

How do you propagate Sun Pitcher?
