Masdevallia floribunda Lindl.

Easy-Blooming Masdevallia, Floriferous Masdevallia, Tailed Orchid

Moderate careEpiphyteNon-toxic820 cm

Masdevallia floribunda is a miniature to small epiphytic orchid and the most northerly member of its genus, native to damp montane forests from southern Mexico through Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica at 400–1,500 m elevation. Unlike most Masdevallias — which demand cool cloud-forest temperatures — it tolerates intermediate to warm conditions, making it one of the most accessible species in the genus for terrarium keeping. Erect, slender ramicauls carry solitary oblong-lanceolate leaves, and it blooms freely from late spring through early autumn, producing a succession of ~2 cm pale yellow to white flowers densely spotted with brown and purple — the name floribunda, meaning "abundant flowers", is well earned. It does best in a well-ventilated orchidarium or open terrarium in a sphagnum or bark-perlite mix kept continuously moist at 75–80% humidity.

Propagation

Divide established tufts every two years during repotting in spring or autumn. Separate the clump with a sterile blade so each division retains at least two ramicauls with a healthy root mass. Pot into fresh sphagnum or bark-perlite mix, maintain humidity above 75%, and keep temperatures in the intermediate range (15–22 °C) during re-establishment. Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal rot at cut surfaces. New basal growth emerging within 6–10 weeks indicates a successful take.
