Hatiora salicornoides

Drunkard's Dream, Dancing Bones Cactus, Bottle Cactus, Spice Cactus

Easy careEpiphyte3060 cm

An epiphytic cactus from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Hatiora salicornoides grows not in desert sand but clinging to tree branches in subtropical woodland, drawing moisture from rain and air. It is effectively leafless — the plant is built entirely from slender, club-shaped stem segments that branch in whorls from each tip, which is what gives it the common name Dancing Bones Cactus. In late winter to early spring it produces bright yellow to orange bell-shaped flowers at the end of each segment. Unlike most cacti it needs moderate humidity, some moisture even during its winter rest, and protection from harsh midday sun — it does best in an open terrarium or hanging basket where air circulates freely.

Propagation

Twist or cut a section of two to four segments at a joint and allow the cut end to callus for one to two days before planting. Set 3–4 cm deep into a barely damp mix of peat and coarse sand or perlite, and keep in bright indirect light at around 20–24 °C. Roots typically appear within four to six weeks. Spring and early summer cuttings root fastest; avoid taking cuttings once flower buds have formed as this triggers bud drop.
