Epidendrum porpax
Beetle Orchid
A miniature creeping orchid native to cloud forests from Mexico down through Central America and into northern South America, found at elevations of 600–2700 m. It grows as an epiphyte — rooted on tree bark rather than soil — forming spreading mats of clustered, 8 cm stems with small, fleshy leaves. The foliage is typically olive green but takes on a striking purple coloration in brighter light. In a closed terrarium it thrives mounted on cork bark or wood, where it can spread freely and eventually produce its waxy, dark red flowers.
