Epidendrum porpax

Beetle Orchid

Easy careEpiphyteNon-toxic58 cm

A miniature creeping orchid native to cloud forests from Mexico down through Central America and into northern South America, found at elevations of 600–2700 m. It grows as an epiphyte — rooted on tree bark rather than soil — forming spreading mats of clustered, 8 cm stems with small, fleshy leaves. The foliage is typically olive green but takes on a striking purple coloration in brighter light. In a closed terrarium it thrives mounted on cork bark or wood, where it can spread freely and eventually produce its waxy, dark red flowers.

Propagation

Divide established mats by separating a section with several stems and roots attached. Best done when repotting or when the mat has spread enough to handle cutting. Remount the division on fresh cork bark or wood and keep humid until new roots establish.
