Barbosella hirtzii
Hirtz's Barbosella
Barbosella hirtzii is a micro-miniature epiphytic orchid from the cloud forests of Ecuador, growing at elevations around 2,450 m where cool temperatures and saturated humidity are constant. It belongs to the subtribe Pleurothallidinae (family Orchidaceae) and forms a tight creeping mat of small, fleshy, strap-like leaves rarely exceeding 2 cm in height — making it one of the smallest orchids suitable for vivarium use. It does best mounted on cork bark or in a shallow sphagnum mix inside a cool, humid closed enclosure; warm household temperatures above 22 °C will stress it. Single flowers, measuring roughly 2 cm, rise on slender peduncles well above the foliage and range from pale yellow-green to purple.
