Barbosella cucullata (Lindl.) Schltr.

Cowled Barbosella, Hooded Barbosella

Moderate careEpiphyte35 cm

A miniature epiphytic orchid from the cloud forests of the Andes, where it clings to mossy tree bark and rocks at elevations between 1,400 and 3,450 metres. Each tiny growth carries a single fleshy leaf no more than 5 cm long, from which a slender flower stem rises well above the foliage — sometimes reaching 18 cm — to display a single hooded bloom in shades ranging from pale yellow and green through orange to brown and purple. Its compact size and love of high humidity make it a rewarding choice for a well-ventilated closed terrarium, where it tends to creep and form low, dense mats over cork bark or damp sphagnum.

Propagation

Divide established clumps once they have formed a dense mat, ensuring each section retains at least 3–4 growths with intact roots. Remount onto fresh cork bark or into moist sphagnum and keep in high humidity while the divisions re-establish.
