Aerangis mystacidii is a miniature epiphytic orchid native to the riverine forests, gorges, and woodland margins of southern and east-central Africa — from south-west Tanzania through Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe down to South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Provinces — where it clings to small twigs and branches, often overhanging streams, at elevations between 60 and 1,800 m. The short monopodial stem carries 2–8 oblanceolate to obovate, leathery, unequally bilobed leaves up to 15 cm long, making it a genuinely miniature plant whose compact footprint belies the drama of its flowering. In summer and autumn it produces arching to pendant racemes up to 30 cm long bearing 3–25 pure white, star-shaped flowers roughly 2.3 cm across, each with an elongate nectar spur; the blooms release a sweet lily-of-the-valley fragrance after dark — an adaptation for nocturnal moth pollination. In cultivation it is considered easy: mount on cork bark with a wisp of sphagnum, provide filtered light at 8,000–20,000 lux, maintain intermediate temperatures (5–27 °C) with a distinct cool-dry winter rest, and mist daily in the growing season — conditions a well-ventilated terrarium or orchidarium replicates well.

Propagation

Like all angraecoid orchids, Aerangis mystacidii produces dust-like seeds that lack endosperm and cannot germinate without either sterile asymbiotic flasking on agar nutrient medium or the presence of a compatible mycorrhizal fungus. Flask-raised seedlings require 3–5 years to reach blooming size. Division is not a practical option: the monopodial growth habit means the plant has a single growing apex, and the miniature scale leaves no usable back divisions.
